Human Host Defense Peptide LL-37 Prevents Bacterial Biofilm Formation

Joerg Overhage, Andrea Campisano, Manjeet Bains, Ellen C. W. Torfs, Bernd H. A. Rehm, Robert E. W. Hancock

, Infection and Immunity Vol. 76, No. 9

This study describes a new, previously unrecognized role for the human cationic host defense peptide LL-37. Using microarrays and follow-up studies, we were able to demonstrate that LL-37 affected biofilm formation by decreasing the attachment of bacterial cells, stimulating twitching motility, and influencing two major quorum sensing systems (Las and Rhl), leading to the downregulation of genes essential for biofilm development.

LL-37, the only human member of the cathelicidin family of antimicrobial peptides

Ulrich H.N. Dürr, U.S. Sudheendra, Ayyalusamy Ramamoorthy

, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes Volume 1758, Issue 9, September 2006, Pages 1408-1425

The focus of this review article will be on LL-37, the only cathelicidin-derived antimicrobial peptide found in humans. LL-37 is a 37-residue, amphipathic, helical peptide found throughout the body and has been shown to exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity.
